Vancouver, B.C. – Kivalliq Energy Corporation (KIV: TSX-V) (the “Company” or “Kivalliq”) today provided an update on drilling at the Lac Cinquante Uranium Deposit located within the Angilak Project in Nunavut, Canada. The first nine drill holes, totalling 1,665 metres, focused on confirmation and infill drilling within the eastern portion of the historic resource at Lac Cinquante.

  • All nine holes drilled to date have intersected altered tuff, the geological host unit at the Lac Cinquante main zone
     
  • Seven of nine drill holes intersected radioactivity within the host tuff unit, downhole widths ranging from 0.3 to 14.8 metres
     
  • Hole 10-LC-003 intersected 14.8 metres of radioactive readings, having an estimated true width of 7.5 metres

“Initial indications from the 2010 program build on the success of last year’s drilling,” stated John Robins, P.Geo, President and CEO. “It is the wide interval of elevated cps counts in Hole 10-LC-003 that has added considerable excitement to this year’s program. We will continue to drill the zone along strike as we await assay results.”

The first nine holes were drilled primarily on 25 metre centers, focusing on confirmation and infill drilling within the eastern portion of the historic resource at Lac Cinquante. Holes 10-LC-002 through 10-LC-009 were step-outs westward and down plunge of significant mineralization intersected last year in holes 09-LC-001 and 09-LC-002. Hole 10-LC-001 was drilled 100 metres east of 09-LC-015, also drilled last year. Drilling continues on this Phase 1 2010 spring program, totalling approximately 1,665 metres to date, with drill hole depths ranging from 50 m to 230 m. (See drill plan www.kivalliqenergy.com)

Core samples from seven holes, with maximum radioactivity levels up to 60,000 CPS, have been sent to Saskatchewan Research Council Geoanalytical Laboratories (SRC) for analysis. SRC operates in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025:2005 (CAN-P-4E), General Requirements for the Competence of Mineral Testing and Calibration laboratories, and is accredited by the Standards Council of Canada. Chemical assay results from this drill program will be reported by Kivalliq upon receipt.

Natural gamma radiation in drill core was measured in counts per second (CPS) using a hand-held Radiation Solutions Inc. RS-121 scintillometer. Vancouver, B.C. – Kivalliq Energy Corporation (KIV: TSX-V) (the “Company” or “Kivalliq”) today announced commencement  of Phase 1 of its 10,000 metre 2010 diamond drill program on the high-grade Lac Cinquante Uranium Deposit situated within the 225,000 acre Angilak Property in Nunavut Territory, Canada.

Drilling at Lac Cinquante in 2009 confirmed high-grade uranium mineralization in a near vertical vein style zone over 900 metres of strike length and down to 125 metres vertical depth. Mineralized zones are hosted within Archean basement rocks and are associated with a hematite-carbonate-chlorite-graphite altered tuff unit containing pitchblende veins and sulphides. The mineralization at Lac Cinquante remains open along strike and to depth.

The main objectives for the two phased 2010 program are to establish a 43-101 compliant resource at Lac Cinquante and to conduct additional exploratory drilling to demonstrate the deposit’s expansion potential.  In addition, prospecting, sampling, and drilling will test high-priority targets along the length of the 9 km Lac Cinquante geophysical trend and elsewhere within the Angilak Project area. The company has also initiated a program of metallurgical and environmental baseline studies.

The Phase 1 spring program will consist of approximately 3,000 meters of diamond drilling as part of the planned 10,000 metre 2010 drill program and will be focussed on confirmation and infill drilling within the historic resource area.

Phase 2 of the program will consist of drilling, prospecting, sampling and summer field studies with the fourth quarter of 2010 dedicated to technical and engineering analysis and the goal of establishing a 43-101 compliant mineral resource by early 2011.

The Lac Cinquante Deposit is Canada’s highest grade uranium deposit outside of the Athabasca Basin.   Kivalliq’s core asset, the 225,000 acre Angilak Project is comprised of  the historic Lac Cinquante uranium deposit, reported to contain 20.4 million pounds of uranium oxide with grades in excess of 1% U3O8 (not National Instrument 43-101 compliant)** and over 150 other uranium occurrences. Exploration Plan 2010

Timeframe

Construction of a fully winterized field camp to support expanded operations will be completed during the months of March and April, 2010. Fuel is currently being mobilized to site and the six month drill program will commence in early April. The fourth quarter of 2010 will be dedicated to technical and engineering analysis, with a goal of establishing a 43-101 compliant mineral resource by early 2011.

Drilling

Up to 10,000 metres drilling is planned at Lac Cinquante, starting with one on-site rig in early April 2010. Drilling will target historic resource dimensions and the known mineralized envelope using information from historic core on-site and results from Kivalliq’s highly successful 2009 drill campaign. Exploration drilling will focus on demonstrating the expansion potential at Lac Cinquante where mineralization is open along strike and to depth. In addition, drilling will test high-priority targets along the 9 km long Lac Cinquante geophysical trend.

Property-wide Exploration

The Company plans to continue an aggressive program of surface exploration on the remainder of the 225,000 acre Angilak property, which has over 150 known uranium occurrences, representing several different model types. This summer program will consist of prospecting, sampling and drill target identification.

Technical Work and Baseline Studies

To aid in the planning of the project’s future exploration and development, the Company is undertaking a series of technical and baseline studies. Preliminary metallurgical work is underway and environmental baseline studies will begin this year. JDS Energy and Mining has also been engaged to perform a conceptual economic and access study for the project. Resource modeling will commence in Q4 2010.

Acceleration of Warrants

Kivalliq also announced that pursuant to the terms of the warrants (the “Warrants”) issued as part of Kivalliq’s private placement offerings (“Private Placements”), which closed on May 26, 2009, Kivalliq has elected to exercise its right (the “Acceleration Right”) to reduce the period within which the Warrants may be exercised. The Company will provide written notice of the acceleration to each of the Warrantholders.

The Acceleration Right was triggered when the weighted average trading price of Kivalliq’s common shares on the TSX Venture Exchange (“Exchange”) was at a price equal to, or greater than, $0.40 CDN, being $0.10 CDN above the current exercise price of the Warrants, for a period of 10 consecutive trading days, commencing February 22, 2010 through to Mar 5, 2009. On March 5, 2010 the closing price of the common shares on the Exchange was $0.425 CDN.

Warrantholders will be entitled to exercise the Warrants for a period of 30 days commencing March 9th, 2010 and ending April 7th, 2010. All Warrants not exercised on or before 12:00 p.m. (Pacific time) on April 7th, 2010 will expire and be void and of no further force and effect. 

Proceeds from the exercise of warrants will be applied towards Kivalliq’s 2010 exploration program.

Highlights of assays from the 2009 Drill Program include*:

  • Drill Hole 09-LC-002 –  2.88 metres grading 2.06% U3O8
  • Drill Hole 09-LC-006 –  2.45 metres grading 1.20% U3O8
  • Drill Hole 09-LC-012 –  1.78 metres grading 1.87% U3O8
  • Drill Hole 09-LC-015 –  1.47 metres grading 2.13% U3O8
  • Drill Hole 09-LC-001 –  1.36 metres grading 1.49% U3O8

Key Point Summary

The Lac Cinquante “main zone” was previously described as a vein-type uranium deposit occurring within a near vertical alteration/structural zone, over a strike length of one kilometre and to a depth of 250 metres. The 2009 Drill Program encountered high-grade uranium mineralization in zones 0.6 to 4.7 metres wide, over 900 metres of strike length and down to 125 metres vertical depth. Mineralized zones are hosted within Archean basement rocks and are associated with a hematite-carbonate-chlorite-graphite altered tuff unit containing pitchblende veins and sulphides.

As reported on October 5, Kivalliq completed 1,745 metres of NQ-sized drilling in 16 holes over the course of the 2009 program. Assay results for 13 of the 16 drill holes are presented in the Table 1 below. These are best reviewed with the accompanying drill collar information, plan map and drill sections posted on the Corporation’s website.

For the three holes not reported herein: 09-LC-009 intersected altered tuff with no elevated uranium; 09-LC-011 was abandoned due to poor drilling conditions; and exploratory hole 09-775-001 tested a geophysical target 4.5 kilometres east with no anomalous radiation noted in core.

In addition to new holes drilled by Kivalliq, samples were collected from nine historic holes drilled at Lac Cinquante in the early 1980’s. Results from these historic holes in-fill the current drilling and corroborate high-grade mineralisation along strike and down dip. In particular, holes YUB54 and YUC2 contain significant uranium intercepts that are off the main trend, and may represent parallel zones that warrant drilling next year.

Collar locations for historic holes were surveyed in the field, azimuths determined using historic data, and dips estimated based on geological evidence and correlation with adjacent holes. New assay results for the nine historic drill holes sampled by Kivalliq are presented in the Table 2 below. Drill equipment remains on-site and Kivalliq plans to continue drilling at Lac Cinquante in 2010. Results from the 2009 Drill Program will be used to guide this Phase 2 drilling, which is intended to test for, and expand, uranium mineralization along strike, down dip and with in-fill holes.  Drilling in 2010 may also test parallel zones identified by ground geophysics and significant assays reported from historic core.

Samples from the 2009 drilling program comprised half split NQ drill core. Samples from historic drill holes comprised half and quarter split core well preserved and in labeled core boxes. Historic core was from work conducted in the early 1980’s and was found in good order and racked on site.

All samples were analyzed for U3O8 and a multi-element suite by Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) Geoanalytical Laboratories. The SRC facility operates in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025:2005 (CAN-P-4E), General Requirements for the Competence of Mineral Testing and Calibration laboratories and is accredited by the Standards Council of Canada. The samples are first analyzed by SRC’s ICP-OES multi-element Uranium exploration ICP1 method. The method analyzes for multi-elements including Ag, Mo, Cu, Pb, Zn and a suite of rare earth elements. ICP results U>1000 parts per million (ppm) are analyzed using SRC’s ISO/IEC 17025:2005-accredited U3O8 Assay method. Laboratory quality control (QC) includes a repeat analysis on every 20th sample. Repeat samples had good reproducibility. Kivalliq’s QC included the insertion of blanks into the sample inventory at the project site prior to shipment in sealed containers. Blanks results were within expectations.

As reported on September 23, Kivalliq completed 1,745 metres of drilling in 16 holes over the course of the 2009 program.

This first phase of drilling was designed to test electromagnetic conductors and confirm dimensions reported for the historic Lac Cinquante uranium deposit.  Lac Cinquante was previously described as a vein-type uranium deposit occurring within a one metre wide near vertical alteration zone, over a strike length of one kilometre and to a depth of 250 metres. The historic uranium resource was reported to contain 20.4 million pounds of uranium oxide with grades in excess of 1% U3O8 (not National Instrument 43-101 compliant).**

During the 2009 program, radioactive intervals in drill core were measured in counts per second (cps) using a hand-held Radiation Solutions Inc. RS-121 Gamma-Ray Scintillometer and RS-230 Gamma-Ray Spectrometer. Anomalous readings in radioactive zones ranged from 300 to 47,000 cps in all holes drilled, compared with a background of 200 to 250 cps in adjacent rocks.  The Corporation cautions that scintillometer readings and down-hole core intervals reported herein cannot be used to determine the uranium grade or true thickness of intervals reported. They are only presented here to indicate zones of radioactive mineralization encountered while drilling, and are used to guide the current drill program until actual chemical assays are received.

Mineralized zones in all holes were up to 4.3 metres wide and associated with a hematite-carbonate-chlorite-graphite altered tuff unit containing pitchblende veins and sulphides. Select scintillometer readings above background are presented in the tables below and are best reviewed with the accompanying drill plan map and drill sections.

All holes were drilled bearing north 26 degrees east. Drill holes 09-LC-008 and 09-LC-009 were drilled from the fourth set-up of the program, at inclinations of minus 55 and 64 degrees respectively. Hole 09-LC-008 intersected a one metre wide, moderately radioactive zone at 126.6 metres, with a peak of 2,000 cps. Drill hole 09-LC-009 intersected the same alteration zone at 120 metres, but with no elevated counts.

Drill holes 09-LC-010 and 09-LC-011 were drilled from a fifth set-up at inclinations of minus 70 and 45 degrees respectively. Elevated radioactivity in 09-LC-010 was measured in two intervals occurring within a 4.3 metre alteration zone starting at 59.2 metres. Readings ranged from background to a high of 14,000 cps. The hole ended in gabbro at 71.0 metres. Hole 09-LC-011 was abandoned due to poor drilling conditions.

Holes 09-LC-012 and 09-LC-013 were drilled from the sixth and western most set-up at inclinations of minus 60 and 45 degrees respectively.  Elevated radioactivity in 09-LC-012 was measured over 1.8 metres from 92.3 to 94.1 metres, with readings ranging from 650 to 35,000 cps.  Drill hole 09-LC-013 intersected a 0.4 metre radioactive zone at 75.9 metres with a peak of 16,000 cps. The holes ended in basalt and gabbro at 110 metres and 92 metres respectively.

Holes 09-LC-014 and 09-LC-015 were drilled from the seventh and eastern most set-up at inclinations of minus 60 and 45 degrees respectively.  Drill hole 09-LC-014 intersected a 4.3 metre wide zone between 57.1 and 61.4 metres containing elevated readings from background to 9,100 cps. Sporadic radioactivity up to 5,200 cps was also noted in small fractures associated with felsic dykes encountered throughout much the of hole. Elevated radioactivity in 09-LC-015 was measured over a 1.0 metre wide zone at 49.8 metres, with readings up to 18,000 cps.  Both holes ended in basalt at 80 metres and 62 metres respectively

Exploration drill hole 09-775-001 tested a geophysical target located 4.5 kilometres east of Lac Cinquante. The hole was drilled bearing north 30 degrees east, at minus 45 degrees, and at 115.4 metres, intersected a 3.9 metre wide chloritic shear zone at a basalt – gabbro contact. No anomalous radiation was measured in the hole, which ended at 194 metres.

In addition to new holes drilled in 2009, core from 23 historic holes was re-logged to provide control during drilling. Core from some of these holes was also submitted for assay.

Split drill core samples from mineralized intervals have been submitted to the Saskatchewan Research Council Geoanalytical Laboratories (SRC) for analysis. SRC operates in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025:2005 (CAN-P-4E), General Requirements for the Competence of Mineral Testing and Calibration laboratories and is accredited by the Standards Council of Canada. Vancouver, B.C. – Kivalliq Energy Corporation (KIV: TSX-V) (the “Corporation” or “Kivalliq”) today announced that the first phase of drilling has been completed at the Lac Cinquante Uranium Deposit located in Nunavut, Canada.  The Corporation has also staked approximately 130,000 acres over prospective areas nearby and within existing prospecting permits. 

This first phase of drilling was designed to confirm reported high-grade intercepts and verify dimensions of this historic uranium deposit.  The drill rig remains on site and the balance of a proposed 10,000 metre drill program is planned for 2010.

“The 2009 drill program at Lac Cinquante was very successful  and gives us the first new drill data in 25 years with which to re-establish and increase the historic uranium resource,” stated John Robins, President and CEO of Kivalliq. 

Kivalliq completed 1,745 metres of drilling in 16 holes. Fourteen of these evaluated the Lac Cinquante Deposit, one tested an exploration target and one hole was lost due to poor drilling conditions. Of the 14 holes drilled at Lac Cinquante, 12 intersected significantly radioactive zones 0.4 to 4.3 metres in width, along 900 metres of strike length and to a depth of 125 metres from surface. Mineralization within the “main zone” at Lac Cinquante remains open along strike in both directions, and to depth, based on the current drilling.

Details of the last nine holes drilled in 2009, including scintillometer results for radioactive intervals, will be reported shortly. Split drill core has been be submitted to the Saskatchewan Research Council Geoanalytical Laboratories (SRC) for analysis and assays will be reported when received.

In addition to drilling, the Corporation extended its land tenure by staking 130,000 acres in prospective areas identified by airborne radiometrics, on historic uranium occurrences nearby and within current prospecting permits. The Angilak Project will now be comprised entirely of crown mineral claims and Inuit Owned Land totalling 225,000 acres.

The first seven holes of the program (09-LC-001 to 09-LC-007) were drilled from three sites distributed along 600 metres of strike length.   Select scintillometer readings above background for the first seven holes are presented in the tables below.

The drilling was designed to intersect an electromagnetic geophysical conductor associated with the Lac Cinquante deposit as well as target high-grade uranium mineralization noted in CIMM Special Paper #33 published by the Geological Survey of Canada in 1986.

Drill holes 09-LC-001 and 09-LC-002 were drilled from the first set-up at inclinations of minus 55 and 67 degrees respectively. All seven holes were collared in basalt and had azimuths bearing north 26 degrees east. The first hole intersected a hematite-carbonate-chlorite-graphite alteration zone in tuff between 102.7 and 104.5 metres that included pitchblende veins and sulphides. Elevated radioactivity was measured between 102.8 and 104.5 metres where the zone is described as a series of 1 to 8 centimetre wide altered mineralized veins and stringers with variable radioactivity ranging from 400 cps to a high of 30,000 cps at 103.9 metres. The hole ended in gabbro at 125 metres.

Drill hole 09-LC-002 intersected the same alteration zone as the first hole between 126.4 and 129.1 metres. Elevated radioactivity was measured in two parallel zones from 126.4 to 127.7 metres and from 128.4 to 129.2 metres Readings in the first zone ranged from 350 to a high of 47,000 cps at a 20 centimetre wide, brecciated pitchblende vein situated at 127.1 metres. Anomalous radioactivity in the second zone ranged from 450 to 13,000 cps. The second hole ended in basalt at 143 metres.

Drill holes 09-LC-003, 09-LC-004 and 09-LC-005 were drilled from a second set-up located 450 metres northwest of the first, at inclinations of minus 45, 67 and 80 degrees respectively. Hole 09-LC-003 intersected sulphide mineralization and altered tuff between 43.6 and 49.7 metres where elevated radioactivity was encountered in several zones 0.4 to 0.6 metres wide. The highest readings were measured between 48.6 and 48.8 metres with radioactivity ranging from 8,000 to 23,000 cps. The hole ended in basalt at 62.0 metres.

Drill hole 09-LC-004 intersected two mineralized zones associated with discreet breccia-veining and hematite alteration within the tuff. The first zone between 45.9 and 46.9 metres had readings from background to 1,100 cps. The hole ended in basalt at 149.0 metres.

Split drill core samples from mineralized intervals will be submitted to the Saskatchewan Research Council Geoanalytical Laboratories (SRC) for analysis. This first phase of drilling will consist of up to 2,000 metres and is designed to confirm high-grade intercepts, verify dimensions and test the potential to expand this historic uranium deposit. Reports by previous operators indicate that Lac Cinquante remains untested at depth and along strike. The summer program will include step-out drilling on the EM (Electro-Magnetic) conductor directly associated with the Lac Cinquante deposit and on parallel conductors that make up the nine kilometre long "Lac Cinquante trend". The balance of the drill program is anticipated to be carried out in 2010. The balance of the drill program will be carried out in early 2010.

“We are excited to initiate the first drill program at Lac Cinquante in over 25 years” stated John Robins, President and CEO of Kivalliq Energy Corporation. “This is Kivalliq’s first step toward delineating a compliant resource and expanding the known extent of the Lac Cinquante uranium deposit”.

During the 2008 field program, Kivalliq’s team was able to identify 106 collars from holes drilled in the early 1980’s. Core for the majority of these holes was located on site, still legible and in good condition. Results from re-sampled intervals of this core returned:  2.24% U3O8 over 1.5 metres, including a 0.5 metre zone of 4.16% U3O8.   

Earlier this year, Kivalliq completed a conceptual 3D model of the deposit by combining historic information and assaying archived drill core.  This model will be a valuable exploration guide in targeting for the summer drill program.  

Phase One drilling will be fully funded through proceeds from Kivalliq’s recent non-brokered private placement totalling $1,565,000 CDN. All regulatory and drill permits are in place, drilling contracts will be awarded shortly, camp facilities with fuel are already on site, and community updates will take place prior to drilling.

Vancouver, B.C. – Kivalliq Energy Corporation (KIV: TSX-V) (the “Corporation” or “Kivalliq”) today announced the successful completion of a 600 line km ground geophysical survey at the Angilak Project in Nunavut. Results from the ground geophysical survey have clearly identified a 9 kilometre long trend of parallel Very Low Frequency Electromagnetic (VLF-EM) conductors. This trend includes the prominent VLF-EM anomaly known to be associated with the Lac Cinquante Uranium Deposit, reported to contain 20.4 million pounds of uranium oxide grading in excess of 1% (not compliant with National Instrument 43-101).**

This 9 kilometre long trend of parallel VLF-EM conductors will now be referred to as “the Lac Cinquante geophysical trend.” A VLF-EM conductor specifically associated with the Lac Cinquante deposit can be traced for 7 kilometres to the south east and may represent a possible extension onto ground previously held by Urangesellschaft MbH, where earlier work failed to recognize the orientation and style of mineralization present at Lac Cinquante. The Lac Cinquante trend also extends 1.6 kilometres to the northwest, beyond the western margin of the historic uranium deposit. In addition, over 20 significant uranium surface showings are related to VLF-EM anomalies within the Lac Cinquante trend, representing excellent exploration targets nearby.

2009 Geophysics

Ground geophysical surveying was carried out on the Angilak property between April 25 and May 22, focussing on previous VLF-EM anomalies and associated mineralized zones at Lac Cinquante. This is the first comprehensive ground survey completed in the region in over 25 years. Orientation surveys testing a variety of methods were first performed over the deposit “main zone” to confirm the geophysical signature and determine best techniques for surveying. Magnetic and VLF-EM methods were selected to complete the 600 line kilometre survey after recognizing a clear correlation between anomalous trends, structure and lithology that hosts the Lac Cinquante deposit.

The ground survey covers an area measuring 14 by 4 kilometres, using 100 metre line spacing, with more detailed surveying carried out in critical areas. The ground survey also straddles the contact, or unconformity between basement Archean rocks and overlying Proterozoic sediments, an important geological feature key to many uranium deposits worldwide. 

The summer field program on the Angilak property is expected to commence in July, and data from this ground survey will be instrumental when planning and implementing the remainder of the 2009 program.
