Vancouver, B.C. – Kivalliq Energy Corporation (KIV: TSX-V) (“Kivalliq”) today announced plans for summer exploration at the Company’s Angilak Property in Nunavut Territory and Hatchet Lake Property in Saskatchewan.

Kivalliq is fully funded to commence exploration at two of the Company’s 100% owned uranium projects in Canada (See news release April 30, 2015). Work in 2015 will focus on:

  • Angilak Property (Nunavut Territory) – Drill testing the high priority Dipole target and advancing multiple uranium targets in the Dipole-RIB Trend through geochemical surveying;
  • Hatchet Lake Property (Saskatchewan) – Advancing multiple uranium targets through geochemical, bio-geochemical, and geophysical surveying.

Dipole-RIB Trend, Angilak Property (Nunavut Territory, Canada)

A $1.5 million 2015 exploration program is planned at the 105,280 hectare (260,154 acre) Angilak Property in Nunavut Territory. The summer program will begin in June by mobilizing staff and supplies to the existing Nutaaq camp. Kivalliq plans to drill a minimum of 1000 metres in six to eight holes at Dipole in July, using one of three diamond drill rigs already on site.  Ground geochemical surveying will run concurrently with the drill program, following-up on high priority targets identified during the 2014 season at Dipole and RIB.

“Our primary goal in 2015 is to discover a high grade, Lac 50-type uranium deposit in the Dipole-RIB Trend,” stated Jeff Ward, Kivalliq’s President. “Discovering a second significant mineralized trend in the southwest portion of Angilak would confirm our belief that this large property hosts an important uranium district in Nunavut.”

The Dipole-RIB Trend is located approximately 25 kilometres southwest of Lac 50, in a northeast trending belt of Archean metavolcanic rock interpreted to be equivalent to Lac 50 Trend resource host rocks. Based on corroborative geophysical and geochemical exploration, Dipole and RIB are excellent analogues to the Lac 50 deposit.

In 1980, historic work by Pan Ocean Oil Ltd identified several uranium prospects in the Dipole target area, including a grab boulder sample 2.5 kilometres to the north assaying 8.41% U3O8 and 5.38% Cu. Subsequent work by Kivalliq outlined a prominent two kilometre long very-low frequency electromagnetic (VLF-EM) conductor coincident with previously undiscovered mineralized boulders along a radioactive shoreline. One angular boulder assayed 2.24% U3O8 and 116 g/t Ag. Enzyme Leach (EL) soil sampling conducted by Kivalliq in 2014 outlined a 3.4 kilometre long uranium-in-soil trend along this VLF-EM conductor, making Dipole the most advanced, drill-ready target on the Angilak Property.

The RIB target, located four kilometres south of Dipole, was identified by Noranda Exploration Ltd. in 1976 as a one kilometre long basement conductor on the western margin of the Angikuni Basin unconformity. During 1977-78, 14 of 25 diamond drill holes intersected uranium mineralization at shallow depths (less than 35 metres), with the two best intercepts being 0.19% U3O8 over 9.3 metres (including 0.52% U3O8 over 2.6 metres) and 1.61% U3O8 over 0.7 metres. Exploration by Kivalliq in 2014 confirmed the RIB conductor using airborne Versatile Time Domain Electromagnetic (VTEM) geophysics. EL soil samples also outlined a corresponding 3.6 kilometre long uranium geochemical trend, demonstrating that historic work tested only a portion of the RIB target. Due to geological similarities with both Dipole and Lac 50, the RIB target warrants further evaluation in 2015.

Hatchet Lake (Athabasca Region of Saskatchewan, Canada)

Kivalliq will commence the Company’s first exploration program at the 13,711 hectare (33,881 acre) Hatchet Lake Property in June. This summer’s exploration will focus on multiple unconformity-related basement targets based on results from over $750,000 in previous exploration performed by Hathor Exploration Limited and Rio Tinto Canada Uranium Corporation (Rio Tinto). It is Kivalliq’s goal to advance targets to drill readiness through a combination of follow-up geochemical, biogeochemical and geophysical surveys covering several priority areas.

Hatchet Lake is located 39 kilometres along trend from Rio Tinto’s Roughrider deposit and within 29 kilometres of Cameco’s Eagle Point uranium mine. The Property was initially staked for its potential to host significant uranium, being situated on the Mudjatik-Wollaston transition zone and along strike from world class deposits such as McArthur River, Cigar Lake and Midwest Lake.

Previous exploration results by Pan Ocean Oil Ltd and Noranda Exploration Ltd referred to above are historical in nature and have not been verified by Kivalliq. However, Kivalliq believes these results are relevant because they are indicative of mineralized zones worthy of follow-up exploration since they are based on drilling and surface exploration carried out by what is believed to be knowledgeable explorers in accordance with acceptable industry practices at the time.

Vancouver, BC – Kivalliq Energy Corporation (TSX/V: KIV) (“Kivalliq”) today announced that Roughrider Exploration Limited (Roughrider) plans to undertake a fully funded winter exploration program at the Jurgen 1 and Jurgen 2 uranium targets located in the western portion of the Genesis Property, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Kivalliq holds a 100% interest in the 200,677 hectare (495,883 acre) Genesis Property, with Roughrider funding the current exploration program. This highly prospective project is located along the Wollaston-Mudjatik trend extending northeast from Saskatchewan’s highly prolific Athabasca Basin. In accordance with the previously disclosed terms of the Option Agreement between Roughrider and Kivalliq, Roughrider has the option to acquire up to an 85% interest in the Genesis Property.

The Jurgen 1 and Jurgen 2 uranium targets are located at the far eastern end of the Collins Bay – Eagle Point lithostructural corridor, on Wellbelove Bay of Wollaston Lake, eastern Athabasca, and across Wollaston Lake from Cameco’s Eagle Point uranium mine. The graphitic pelite, arkose, and calc-silicate rocks in the area are cross-cut by several north trending Tabbernor faults. Attention was drawn to the area by anomalous lake sediment samples and a series of linear NE trending airborne electromagnetic (EM) geophysical conductors assumed to represent graphitic horizons in pelitic rocks.

The summer 2014 exploration program included the establishment of preliminary soil grids overlying EM conductors at Jurgen 1 and Jurgen 2 (previously reported; news release December 1, 2014).  Enzyme leach analysis of the soils revealed a number of uranium in soil results at or above the 95th percentile proximal to the EM conductors, indicating strong potential drill targets.  The anomalous sections of the conductors occur on land and would be amenable to either winter or summer drilling.

A program of roughly 80 line-kilometres of grid geophysics and collection of 550 biogeochemical samples at Jurgen 1 and 2 has been designed to best refine drill targets. Ground magnetic/VLF-EM geophysical surveys and biogeochemical sampling will be carried out on grids emplaced to cover geochemically anomalous portions of the Jurgen 1 and Jurgen 2 conductors highlighted by the 2014 summer program at Genesis.  The program is scheduled to be completed in March.

Vancouver, BC – Kivalliq Energy Corporation (TSX V: KIV) (Kivalliq) and Roughrider Exploration Limited (REL) today announced final results from the 2014 Phase 1 Exploration Program on the 200,677 hectare (495,883 acre)  Genesis Property uranium project in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Final data has now been received from 5,984 line kilometres of DIGHEM airborne magnetic, electromagnetic (EM) and radiometric surveying, 291 lake sediment samples, 1,347 enzyme leach (EL) soil samples, 62 biogeochemical samples and 16 rocks samples collected from the property.

The Phase 1 program was undertaken between July 22 and September 10, 2014. Exploration focused on the definition of near surface, basement-hosted, structurally controlled uranium targets analogous to the Millennium, Roughrider and Eagle Point deposits located southwest of the Genesis Property in basement lithologies below the unconformity with the Proterozoic Athabasca Basin. Roughrider funded the Phase 1 program pursuant to an Option Agreement allowing Roughrider to acquire up to an 85% interest in the Genesis Property.

Genesis Property 2014 Phase 1 Exploration Program Highlights

  • The identification of six new priority target areas highlights the success of the 2014 Phase 1 Exploration Program: Jurgen 1, Jurgen 2, Johnston/GAP, Kingston, Daniel’s Bay and Sava Lake.
  • Over 410 kilometres of linear EM conductors identified by airborne geophysical surveying.
  • Prospecting samples at the newly added GAP claims, include two frost heaved subcrop occurrences  that assayed 0.36% U3O8 and 1.40% U3O8 respectively. 
  • A boulder from a newly discovered float occurrence in the Jurgen Lake area assayed 1.41% U3O8.
  • Several EL soil sample grids with multielement anomalies correlating to EM conductors; referred to as Jurgen 1 and Jurgen 2, two conductors returned characteristic apical and contact peak soil signatures yielding values of up to 44.1 parts per billion uranium (ppb U)  and 17.2 ppb U respectively.
  • Anomalous biogeochemical results with  uranium  values up to 20 ppb U at Daniels Bay correlate with an arcuate EM conductor and anomalous EL soil results.
  • Anomalous  biogeochemical results with uranium values up to 8 ppb U adjacent to the 16 kilometer long Sava Lake conductor (see REL news release of Oct 21, 2014).
  • Lake sediment samples have identified a strong uranium value in a bay on the northeast end of Wollaston Lake and confirmed highly anomalous uranium values upon follow-up to historic results at Burrill Bay, Sava Lake and Melnick Lake target areas.

CGG DIGHEM Airborne Survey

Multiple EM conductors were identified in each of eight airborne grids flown. The structures noted include a conductor swarm at Johnston/GAP, anticlinal structures at Burrill Bay and Daniels Bay, a circular conductive trend around a magnetically defined dome at Kingston Lake and a unique 16 kilometre long conductor at Sava Lake intersected by north striking magnetic linears. Combined with 2006 historic airborne EM survey data, the Genesis property hosts over 410 kilometres of linear EM conductors.

A total of 5,984 line kilometres of helicopter-borne Frequency Domain DIGHEM electromagnetic, magnetic and radiometric surveying was flown over eight target blocks by CGG Canada Services Ltd. between July 23 and August 14, 2014. The survey was flown at line intervals of either 100 or 200 metres along flight lines oriented at azimuth 135° and 315°.

Prospecting

Radioactive frost heaved boulders were confirmed in two locations at the newly acquired GAP claims just over the border in Manitoba (see KIV news release of Oct 30, 2014). Two samples of altered calc-silicate boulders measured up to 14,000 counts per second (cps) and 27,700 cps in the field and assayed 0.36% U3O8 and 1.40% U3O8 respectively.

While investigating two discrete parallel conductive trends on the Jurgen Lake block, crews identified pitchblende blebs in a highly altered meta-sedimentary boulder occurrence with insitu radiometric values measuring >14,000 cps. A sample from the occurrence assayed 1.41% U3O8.

Prospecting traverses were focused on conductive and structural trends indicated by airborne geophysical surveys, as follow up to known historic uranium showings and in conjunction with the geochemical sampling program. Rock samples and site descriptions were collected where warranted. A total of 139 prospecting sites were noted and 16 rock samples were collected from seven areas. All samples were analyzed by multi-element ICP at SRC Geoanalytical Laboratories (SRC). Sample results greater than 1,000ppm U are assayed for U3O8.

Enzyme Leach Soil Sampling

A total of 1,347 soil samples were collected from 28 target areas, along sample lines or within sample grids, to investigate anomalous geological (historic rock, soil or lake sediment data) or geophysical features (conductors or structures defined by the 2014 DIGHEM survey or from historic data). These samples were sent to Activation Laboratories Ltd. (Actlabs) for EL analysis. Results have identified several target areas where mulitelement EL soil anomalies measured in ppb occur coincident to EM conductive trends consistent with structurally controlled basement hosted uranium mineralization. Results for uranium range from below the detection threshold at 0.1 ppb U to 44.1 ppb U, with a backgound of 1.2 ppb.

In the Jurgen Lake area, at the Jurgen 1 target, 18 samples were collected along three lines spaced 200 metres apart that cross an EM conductor in an area where a 2007 till sample from previous workers had shown an anomalous flourimetric U value. Three samples at Jurgen 1 yielded the highest uranium values from the 2014 EL sampling program with 44.1 ppb U, 25.3 ppb U and 21.9 ppb U respectively. The anomlous values define a soil geochemical signature with anomalous values on either side of the conductor sampled.

Five kilometres west of Jurgen 1 but on a parallel EM conductor, 66 samples were collected on six lines spaced 200 metres apart along  the Jurgen 2 conductor where a 2007 till sample from previous workers had shown an anomalous flourimetric U result. The Jurgen 2 sample grid returned five uranium values above the 2014 EL program 98th percentile. The three highest values are 17.2 ppb U, 14.2 ppb U and 7.5 ppb U respectively. The  anomalous  values show a soil geochemical signature at Jurgen 2 with apical values centered over the EM conductor and contact values on either side.

Several sample lines were collected across a conductive fold nose/anticline structure at Daniels Bay. Three samples apical to the structure returned uranium values above the 98th percentile. Two adjacent samples over the fold  nose  returned 5.7 ppb U and 7.1 ppb U respectively. A third sample over the southeast limb of the structure returned 11.7 ppb U.

At Kingston Lake an EM conductor flanks the southeast edge of a domal intrusive. This feature and an associated conductive splay striking northeast were investigated with 93 EL samples on eight sample lines over three separate areas. Each of the three conductive areas tested returned anomalous correlating apical uranium in soil values. Two of these were above the 98th percentile with results of 9.2 ppb U, 6.1 ppb U. The third was above the 95th percentile with 5.2 ppb U.  

At Johnston Lake the mineral potential of a swarm of northeast striking conductors was assessed with 86 samples taken along eight widely sample lines placed along a strike length of approximately 2.5 kilometres. Five results from the sampling returned uranium values above the 98th percentile. The highest values were 12.2 ppb U, 9.9 ppb U and 6.2 ppb U.

Biogeochem Sampling

Anomalous uranium values were identified on two of four biogeochemical orientation grids completed. A total of 162 samples were collected from grids located in the Daniel’s Bay, Sava Lake and Cochrane River and Kingston Lake areas. On the south limb of the Daniels Bay conductive structure, where EL samples returned uranium values above the 98th percentile, biogeochemical samples returned spatially corroborating values of 20 ppb U and 4 ppb U.

Four lines with a total of 71 biogeochemical samples were collected along a strike length of 1.4 kilometers over the Sava Lake conductor where the structure strikes adjacent to a strongly anomalous 89.2 ppm U lake sediment value. Eight samples returned values above the 95th percentile for uranium.  On the eastern most line sample, high counts of 8 ppb U, 7 ppb U and 6 ppb U respectively (announced by REL Oct 21, 2014) occurred adjacent to each other on the north side of the conductor. 

Black spruce trees, ubiquitous throughout the Genesis property including areas of muskeg cover where soil is absent, have been documented as a reliable source of sampling media (needles, barks and twigs) yielding reproducible biogeochemical results in several academic studies and  exploration programs. A total of 162 orientation black spruce samples (twigs with needles) were sent to Actlabs for un-ashed vegetation 63 element ICP/MS biogeochemical analysis. Uranium results ranged from below the detection limit at 1 ppb U to a maximum of 20 ppb U, with a background of 2 ppb.

Lake Sediment Sampling

The work has identified anomalous uranium values in a bay on the northeast side of Wollaston Lake (Southwest Jurgen area) with a sample returning 50.6 ppm U from lake sediments overlying a well defined EM conductor. In addition, as follow-up to historic results, lake sediment samples collected over the apex of an anticlinal structure at Burrill Bay returned 102 ppm U with two promixal samples recovering 69.9 ppm U and 53.2 ppm U. On the east side of the Sava Lake area, adjacent to the 16 kilometre long Sava Lake conductor, a sample returned 89.2 ppm U. On the west side of the Sava Lake area, where the Sava conductor is broken and offset by north-south trending linears seen in the magnetic data a second sample returned a strongly anomalous 63.3 ppm U. In the Melnick Lake target area, three adjacent samples collected from a single lake overlying an east-west trending magnetic break returned values ranging from 41.7 ppm U to to 51.2 ppm U.

A total of 291 lake sediment samples were sent to SRC Geoanalytical Laboratories (SRC) for 44 element ICP-MS analysis. Uranium values ranged from 0.7 ppm U to 102 ppm U, with a background of 8.6 ppb.

2014 Geochemical Program Frequency Analysis 

Anomalous uranium thresholds for the Genesis Property 2014 geochemical sampling program as defined by percentiles values are shown in Table 1 below.

Anomalous ranges for Enzyme Leach and Biogeochemical uranium analyses received from Actlabs and lake sediment uranium analyses received from SRC were generated through statistical frequency analysis. Background was determined by the population mean. A general association with copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), molybdenum (Mo), lead (Pb) and rare earth elements (REE) is demonstrated with anomalous uranium in soils, biogeochemical and lake sediment samples. 

QA/QC

Rock and lake sediment samples from the Genesis Property were sent to the SRC for analysis. The SRC facility operates in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025:2005 (CAN-P-4E), General Requirements for the Competence of Mineral Testing and Calibration laboratories and is accredited by the Standards Council of Canada. Rock samples are first analyzed by SRC's ICP-OES multi-element Uranium exploration ICP1 method. ICP results U>1,000 ppm are analyzed using SRC's ISO/IEC 17025:2005-accredited U3O8 Assay method. Lake sediment samples are analyzed by ICP-MS method. The detection limit for uranium is 0.1 ppm.  A 0.520 g pulp is digested with 2.25 ml of 8:1 ultrapure nitric and hydrochloric acids (HNO3:HCl) for 1 hour at 95° C in a hot water bath and then diluted using deionized water prior to analysis. The instruments used were Optima 4300DV or Optima 5300DV. Laboratory rock sample quality control (QC) includes a repeat analysis on every 20th sample. Laboratory lake sediment QC includes quality control samples are prepared and analyzed with each batch of samples and a duplicate analysis in every 40 samples. Kivalliq’s quality assurance and quality control procedures include the systematic insertion of blanks and standards into the lake sediment sample string. All QA/QC results for both rocks and lake sediments were within expectations.

Genesis Property Enzyme leach soil samples and biogeochemical samples were sent to Activation Laboratories Ltd. (Actlabs). The Actlabs facility is accredited to international quality standards through the International Organization for Standardization/International Electrotechnical Commission (ISO/IEC) 17025 (ISO/IEC 17025 includes ISO 9001 and ISO 9002 specifications) with CAN-P-1578 (Forensics), CAN-P-1579 (Mineral Analysis) and CAN-P-1585 (Environmental) for specific registered tests by the SCC. For EL soil sample analysis, a 0.75 gram sample of -60 mesh B soil horizon is leached in an enzyme matrix containing a glucose oxidaze solution at 30°C for one hour, where it reacts with amorphous MnO2 dissolving it. Metals complex with the gluconic acid present and solutions are then analyzed on a Perkin Elmer ELAN 6000, 6100 or 9000 ICP/MS.  For Biogeochemical analysis, raw vegetation samples are digested in aqua regia at 95°C for 2 hours. Resultant sample solutions are diluted and analyzed on a Perkin Elmer Sciex ELAN 6000, 6100 or 9000  ICP/MS. Laboratory enzyme leach soil sample QC includes four controls and one blank for every 49 samples leached and a repeat analysis on every 10th sample. Field quality assurance and quality control procedures for soil samples included the systematic insertion of blanks, standards and duplicates in the field. Laboratory biogeochemical sample QC includes instrument recalibration and insertion and analysis of one blank and two digested controls every 69 samples. Duplicates are digested and analyzed every 14 samples. All QA/QC results were within expectations.

Vancouver, BC – Kivalliq Energy Corporation (Kivalliq – KIV:TSX-V) today announced results received from the 2014 exploration program at Kivalliq’s 275,469 acre Angilak Property located in Nunavut Territory, Canada.

2014 Angilak Property Exploration Highlights:

  • Geochemical results from 1,514 Enzyme Leach (EL) soil samples have significantly upgraded key drill targets at Dipole, Hot and KU
  • 1,335 line kilometres of Versatile Time Domain Electromagnetic (VTEM) airborne geophysics was flown in two grids over several target areas
  • The Dipole target is a distinct, two kilometre long geophysical anomaly having a coincident boulder assay of 2.24% U3O8, now confirmed by anomalous uranium-in-soil (U) trend over 3.4 kilometres of strike length
  • The RIB target area, where historic drilling encountered uranium mineralization at shallow depths, is a geochemical and geophysical analogue to Dipole

Based upon review of data generated from Kivalliq’s 2014 geophysical and geochemical surveys, Dipole has now emerged as a top priority drill target in the southwest portion of the Angilak Property.

Dipole Target Area

The Dipole target is located approximately 27 kilometres southwest of Lac 50, in a northeast trending belt of Archean metavolcanic rock interpreted to be equivalent to Lac 50 Trend resource host rocks. In 2011, a very-low frequency electromagnetic (VLF-EM) geophysical ground survey outlined a prominent two kilometre long conductor coincident with mineralized boulders found along a radioactive shoreline. One angular boulder assayed 2.24% U3O8, 0.94% Mo, and 116 g/t Ag. In 2014, EL soil sampling within the Dipole target area focused on the Dipole VLF-EM conductor and the historic and similar RIB target located four kilometres south of Dipole.

At Dipole, 237 EL geochemical sample results identified a 3.4 kilometre long uranium-in-soil trend with 107 anomalous values between 6.0 parts per billion (ppb) and 56.3 ppb. The geochemical trend also contains anomalous copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo) and silver (Ag) values. Based on corroborative geophysical and geochemical results, Dipole is an excellent analogue to the Lac 50 deposit and is now Kivalliq’s most advanced, drill-ready target outside of the Lac 50 Trend.

In 1980, historic work by Pan Ocean Oil Ltd., three kilometres north of the Dipole target, identified several other uranium prospects resulting in a drill intercept of 1.2 metres grading 0.07% U3O8 and 0.15% Cu. Grab samples at that time returned 8.41% U3O8 and 5.38% Cu from boulders located one kilometre further north of the Pan Ocean drill hole.

RIB Target

The RIB target was identified by airborne geophysics conducted by Noranda Exploration Ltd. in 1976, which showed a strong basement conductor occurring along the western margin of the Angikuni Basin unconformity. During 1977-78, 14 of 25 diamond drill holes intersected uranium mineralization at shallow depths, with the two best intercepts being 0.19% U3O8 over 9.3 metres (including 0.52% U3O8 over 2.6 metres) and 1.61% U3O8 over 0.7 metres.

Exploration performed by Kivalliq in 2014 confirmed the RIB conductor using VTEM methods. In addition, 74 of 211 EL soil samples outlined a coincident 3.6 kilometre long geochemical trend with anomalous uranium values between 6.0 ppb and 61.9 ppb. Based on the 2014 results, previous drilling tested only a portion of the RIB target and the area warrants closer evaluation due to geological similarities with both Dipole and Lac 50.

VTEM Airborne Geophysical Survey

As part of the 2014 Angilak exploration program, a 1,335 line kilometre helicopter-borne VTEM survey was completed by Geotech Ltd. of Aurora, Ontario at 200 metre line spacing that focused on two grids in key target areas at the northeast and west side of the Angikuni Basin. Preliminary data has confirmed geophysical targets at Dipole and RIB. Final data is expected shortly and will be used to further refine shallow drill targets situated south of the Lac 50 Trend along the unconformity, or just within basin cover rocks (i.e. KU and Nine Iron).

Enzyme Leach Soil Sampling

The 2014 soil geochemical sampling program focussed on priority geophysical trends and geochemically anomalous areas identified by Kivalliq’s 2013 exploration programs. A total of 1,514 soil samples were collected from 10 grids along lines spaced approximately 100 to 200 metres apart using 25 to 50 metre stations. These soil samples were analysed at Activation Laboratories Ltd. (“Actlabs”) in Ancaster, Ontario using a 67 element ICP-MS Enzyme Leach method. 379 anomalous uranium results (25% of all samples taken) range from 6.0 ppb U to a high of 285 ppb U. Of these anomalous results, 379, 231,154 and 77 reported in the 75th, 85th, 90th and 95th percentiles respectively.  Anomalous ranges for EL uranium analyses were determined through statistical frequency analysis. Background was calculated by the population mean after cutting significant outliers to the 99th percentile. Anomalous U was also compared with Cu, Mo and Ag to identify Lac 50 Trend-type mineralization. 225 samples yielded anomalous Cu values >70 ppb, 188 anomalous samples were >3.0 ppb Mo, and 94 anomalous samples were >2.0 ppb Ag. Table 1 shows value ranges and anomalous thresholds for elements of interest obtained by the 2014 EL soil sampling program.

Vancouver, BC – Kivalliq Energy Corporation (KIV: TSX-V) (“Kivalliq”) today announced, together with partner Roughrider Exploration Limited ("Roughrider") the acquisition of a new land position to the northeast of the existing Genesis Property through a combination of outright purchase, property exchange, and staking in both Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The new area added to the Genesis Property covers favorable Athabasca basement geology and data from previous operators displays strong northeast trending electromagnetic (“EM”) conductors and coincident high-grade uranium in boulder float geochemistry.

Kivalliq and Roughrider purchased Saskatchewan Mineral Claim MC1246, subject to TSX-V approval, outright from a private party for 100,000 Roughrider shares, staked Saskatchewan Mineral Claims MC2077 and MC2078 and staked the Gap 1, 2 and 3 claims in Manitoba, directly adjacent to MC1246. Collectively, the new claims add 1,914 hectares (4,729 acres) of highly prospective exploration ground and a new target area within the Genesis Property uranium project.

Exploration by past workers in the claim area included airborne geophysical surveys, prospecting, soil surveys, and rock/boulder sampling particularly near the eastern side of the claim package in the vicinity of the Saskatchewan/Manitoba border. This includes two clusters of boulders on the Gap 1, 2, and 3 claims that reported, respectively; six samples exceeding 1% U3O8, including highs of 2.68% U3O8 and 2.76% U3O8, and six samples exceeding 0.5% U3O8 including a high of 1.63% U3O8. These samples are coincident with a strong, two kilometre long northeast trending airborne EM conductor. A second strong conductive trend several kilometres long parallels this trend to the northwest, and passes through the main body of the MC1246 claim.

Kivalliq field personnel carried out a brief field examination while staking the Manitoba claims and confirmed the location of several of the historic sample results, including numerous coarse angular metasedimentary boulders. Assay results are still pending from several samples taken, but on-site testing with a hand held scintillometer returned counts of up to 27,000 counts per second “cps”.

Kivalliq holds a 100% interest in the 200,677 hectare (495,883 acre) Genesis Property, with Roughrider funding the current exploration program. Natural gamma radiation was measured in counts per second using a hand-held Radiation Solutions Inc. RS-121 scintillometer. Kivalliq cautions that scintillometer cps readings are not directly related to uranium grade and are only used to indicate radioactive material.

The Genesis Property field work began July 23, 2014 with the commencement of airborne geophysical surveys. Lake sediment and soil sampling programs followed, with exploration completed by September 7, 2014. As owner and operator, Kivalliq has granted Roughrider an option to acquire up to an 85% interest in the Genesis Property (see news release dated May 21, 2014). The Phase 1 program, budgeted at CDN$1 million and fully funded by Roughrider, is designed with a goal of advancing a number of uranium targets for drill testing.

A helicopter-borne DIGHEM EM geophysical survey of 6,006 line kilometres including: magnetics, electromagnetics (“EM”) and radiometrics was completed on eight grids by CGG Canada Service Ltd. The final data has been received and is currently being reviewed. Based on preliminary interpretations, a number of new or expanded EM conductors were investigated by field crews. A total of 1,351 soil and 162 biogeochemical grid controlled samples were collected. Samples were sent to Activation Laboratories Ltd. in Ontario for analysis.

Kivalliq field crews collected 291 lake sediment samples which have been shipped to Saskatchewan Research Council in Saskatoon for analysis. Sampling focused on areas of historic anomalies, new and existing EM conductors, and areas of known broad lake sediment anomalies that required closer spaced sampling.

Vancouver, British Columbia – Kivalliq Energy Corporation (TSX-V:KIV) (“Kivalliq”) today announced the commencement of the 2014 exploration program at Kivalliq’s 100% owned Genesis Property. The Genesis Property is a 491,154 acre uranium exploration project, staked by Kivalliq in January 2014, situated within a structural corridor that hosts the majority of the high grade uranium resources within and adjacent to the current boundaries of the Athabasca Basin in Saskatchewan, Canada.

“Phase 1” of the 2014 exploration program is budgeted at CDN$1 million and will be executed by Kivalliq, owner and operator of the Genesis Property. The proposed program will be fully funded by Roughrider Exploration Ltd. (“Roughrider”). As previously disclosed, Kivalliq has granted Roughrider an option to acquire up to an 85% interest in the Genesis Property.

The Phase 1 program will consist of about 6,000 kilometres of helicopter borne geophysical surveying, (magnetics, electromagnetics and radiometrics), focused on eight priority zones within the project area.  The airborne survey is now underway, concurrent with a 300 sample lake sediment sampling program to define new uranium anomalies within the target areas. Upon receipt of preliminary results from the airborne geophysical survey, Kivalliq will “ground truth” geophysical anomalies, favorable structures and areas of historic showings. A prospecting, mapping and geochemical soil sampling program will be conducted to further refine target areas and generate additional new targets. The program is expected to run until late September or early October, with a goal of advancing a number of uranium targets for drill testing.

Vancouver, British Columbia – Kivalliq Energy Corporation (TSX-V:KIV) (“Kivalliq”) today announced that it had acquired ownership of 1,969,828 common shares of Roughrider Exploration Limited (“Roughrider”) (formerly Westham Resources Corp.) on July 16, 2014 through a mining option agreement. As a result of this acquisition, Kivalliq owns 1,969,828 common shares representing 10% of the issued and outstanding capital of Roughrider.

Pursuant to the Mining Option Agreement dated July 10, 2014 between Kivalliq and Roughrider, in order to earn the initial 50% interest, Roughrider must issue to Kivalliq an additional 1,969,828 common shares, being an additional 10% of Roughrider’s issued shares, on a non-diluted basis, plus cash payments, on or before August 31, 2016.  The shares issued to Kivalliq are subject to a 12-month hold period.

Kivalliq Energy Corporation (“Kivalliq”, TSX-V: KIV) today provided an update on ongoing metallurgical and beneficiation studies for Kivalliq’s 340,268 acre Angilak Property in Nunavut Territory. This update summarizes preliminary results from work performed on the Lac 50 Trend deposits, including: metallurgical testing of the J4 and Lac 50 zones as well as characterization studies related to optimal ore sorting methods.

Key Point Summary:

  • J4 Zone flotation achieved an optimum sulphide recovery of 99.2% in alkaline solution at a grind size of 100% passing 140 mesh (106 µm).
  • Positive alkaline leach results on J4 Zone indicate rapid uranium extraction: 92.3% in 12 hours, 95.2% in 24 hours and 96.7% in 48 hours.
  • Using improved alkaline leach parameters defined by the J4 Zone testing, retesting of the 2012 Lac 50 composite upgraded the leach extraction of uranium to: 91.7% in 12 hours, 95.1% in 24 hours and 96.4% in 48 hours. (previous results released February 28, 2013)
  • J4 Zone sulphide flotation and alkaline leach results are consistent with other Lac 50 deposits.
  • Preliminary ore sort characterization of rock specimens from Lac 50 deposits indicates that radiometric sorting will be very effective. Radiometric characterization analysis demonstrates a 56% reduction in mass with 98% U3O8 recovery.

Metallurgical Results Demonstrate High Uranium Recoveries and Rapid Leach Kinetics

In 2012, the Saskatchewan Research Council (“SRC”) commenced a metallurgical testing program on core from Kivalliq’s Lac 50 Trend. The program objectives were to maximize uranium extraction through the removal of sulphides using flotation and optimizing the alkaline leaching processes. Results from the 2012 metallurgical program were very encouraging with high U3O8 recovery rates and the production of a low impurity final yellowcake product. (see Kivalliq news release of February 28, 2013)

In 2013, metallurgical testing was expanded to include a composite sample from the newly discovered J4 deposit. The goal was to compare alkaline leach parameters of the J4 Zone to previous test work, while continuing to develop optimal grinding, sulphide flotation and leach conditions. A 26.0 kilogram composite derived from 44 split drill core pulp rejects was submitted to the SRC Mineral Processing Group for metallurgical analysis. Pulp samples used in the composite were selected from 17 holes drilled along 650 metres of strike length at J4 Zone.  A head grade sample taken from the composite and analyzed by total digestion ICP at SRC is shown in Table 1.

Sulphide flotation on J4 Zone composite material tested variable grind sizes in water and alkaline solution respectively. An optimum sulphide recovery of 99.2% was achieved in alkaline solution at a grind size of 100% passing 140 mesh (106 µm).

Alkaline leaching of J4 Zone flotation tails achieved rapid uranium extraction of 86.7% in 6 hours, 92.3% in 12 hours, 95.2% in 24 hours, 96.7% in 48 hours, 97.2% in 72 hours, and 97.5% in 96 hours under the following conditions: 100% passing 140 mesh grind, 70oC, 50% solids slurry, 50 g/L Na2CO3 and 20 g/L NaHCO3 solution chemistry and oxygen at 300 kilopascals as oxidant.

Using the same optimized conditions, an additional test was conducted on a sample from the 2012 Lac 50 composite (but at 100% passing 200 mesh grind as per 2012 composite preparation). When compared to the 2012 result leach kinetics improved with uranium extractions of 83.6% in 6 hours, 91.7% in 12 hours, 95.1% in 24 hours, 96.4% in 48 hours, 97.0% in 72 hours, and 97.3% in 96 hours. Figure 1 compares alkaline leach kinetics from 2013 to that of 2012.

Preliminary Ore Sorting Investigation Shows Amenability to Radiometric Sorting

In May 2013, Kivalliq engaged TOMRA Sorting Inc. (TOMRA) in Surrey, British Columbia to characterize a set of rock specimens from the Lac 50 Trend uranium deposits using Radiometric (RM), Dual Energy X-Ray Transmission (DEXRT), conductivity and magnetic susceptibility (EM) and visible spectrum (Optical) sensors. Preliminary ore characterization studies were performed to determine whether mineral sorting technology could efficiently identify and segregate uranium bearing minerals.

"We are very pleased with the success of preliminary radiometric sorting." stated Jeff Ward, President Kivalliq Energy. "Larger bulk testing using production-scale sorting methods will now be considered as a processing option to concentrate uranium bearing rocks at Lac 50."

Kivalliq delivered to TOMRA a 1.45 kilogram suite of high grade, medium grade, low grade and waste specimens, comprised of 138 sized rock chips (2.0 cm to 3.0 cm across), collected from half split NQ drill core intersections representative of the Lac 50 Trend uranium deposits. Characterization measurements were carried out on the entire suite using the RM, DEXRT, EM and Optical sensors. Following sensor characterization, individual rock specimens were shipped to SRC for analysis by total digestion ICP. The average grade of the sample was 1.06% U3O8.

Theoretical perfect sort recovery curves for the samples were obtained by ordering the individual rocks in descending U3O8 grade. Using the order of the perfect sort and the mass and grade of each specimen, curves were calculated for a theoretical perfect recovery, concentrate grade and tails grade for the samples. These results are then compared to the grade and recovery curves for each sensors tested.

Using radiometric sensors proved to be the most effective method for sorting Lac 50 samples by U3O8 grade. RM characterisation was performed at Hazen Research Inc. (Hazen) in Golden Colorado where a RM bench top test system was configured to simulate a full scale RM sorter. The theoretically perfect sort curve showed 98.3% recovery of U3O8 at a mass recovery of 44% (or 56% mass rejected with only 1.7% loss of U3O8). The actual short integration RM sort recovered 98.0% of U3O8 at a mass recovery to concentrate of 44% (56% mass rejected with 2.0% loss of total U3O8) and is almost identical to a theoretical perfect sort recovery curve. Concentrate and tails grades were 2.37% U3O8 and 0.03% U3O8 respectively. Figure 2 shows comparative RM sort curves for the Lac 50 sample.

QA/QC

The SRC facility operates in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025:2005 (CAN-P-4E), General Requirements for the Competence of Mineral Testing and Calibration laboratories and is accredited by the Standards Council of Canada. The samples are analyzed by SRC's ICP-OES multi-element ICP1 assay method.  ICP1 results are reported in parts per million (ppm). 1 ppm = 1g/tonne, 10,000 ppm = 1%. TOMRA ICP U assays in ppm were converted to % U3O8 as follows: % U3O8 = ppm U x 0.01179

Assays received from 1538 geochemical samples collected within the Lac 50 Trend, and directly to the south in the Angikuni sub-basin, have identified new anomalous zones and prioritized existing zones for future exploratory and resource drilling.

Lac 50 Trend Summer 2013 Exploration Results

The majority of the 2013 soil geochemical sampling program was conducted within the three kilometre wide by 12 kilometre long Lac 50 Trend. The goal of the program was threefold: to confirm the effectiveness of the Enzyme Leach method by sampling known areas of mineralization; to test for extensions along strike or adjacent to current inferred resource areas and; to evaluate the potential mineralization of numerous geophysical conductors not yet tested by drilling.

The program was successful in all aspects with 387 anomalous uranium-in-soil results reported using the 75th percentile threshold. Anomalous uranium-in-soil trends, which exhibit highs between 19.4 ppb and 44.0 ppb U, correlate to known Lac 50 Trend deposits and associated geophysics. Linear uranium geochemical anomalies in high-priority zones like Blaze, Spark, Pulse and ML extend at least 600 metres beyond existing drill holes, demonstrating much more work is warranted in these areas. Additional highlights include the delineation of uranium geochemical trends extending 850 metres northwest (through the J1 Zone) and 1,200 metres southeast along the J4 VLF electromagnetic (“EM”) conductor. Also of note, sampling in the Hot target area outlined a broad anomalous uranium-in-soil anomaly, measuring 500 metres wide by 2,600 metres long. The Hot Trend contains peak anomalous geochemical assays up to 2,880 ppb U, the highest in the Lac 50 area, and remains open along strike to the northwest.

In addition, three separate EM conductor targets located 3.8 kilometres northeast, 1.8 kilometres southeast, and 1.0 kilometre north respectively of Lac 50 Trend resources were given new priority based on the soil geochemical work. 78 soil samples collected in these areas assayed between 6.6 ppb and 76.2 ppb U. These results suggest uranium mineralization related to untested linear geophysical signatures occur at targets well outside the area of known Lac 50 Trend deposits.

These well-defined uranium-in-soil trends and peak U values outlined by the 2013 survey will be valuable when prioritizing geophysical conductors and selecting specific drill sites on future programs.

Nine Iron-KU Trend Results

Ground geophysical surveying performed in April 2013 has identified an EM conductive trend on new claims staked in October 2012 within the Proterozoic-age Angikuni sedimentary sub-basin south of the Lac 50 Trend.  This new geophysical EM target is located approximately 5.5 kilometres south of, and parallel to the Lac 50 Trend resource and originates from the high-priority Nine Iron Zone, extending 8.1 kilometres to the northwest to what is now called the “KU Zone”. Historic trenches in the KU Zone sampled by Urangesellschaft Canada Ltd. in 1980 were reported to include 1.9% U3O8 over 1.2 metres.

203 soil geochemical samples were collected in separate areas 5.8 kilometres apart and at either end of the Nine Iron-KU trend.  44 anomalous results, ranging from 6.6 ppb U to a peak of 30.6 ppb U, correlate well to both the KU trenches and the newly identified EM conductive trend which connects KU to Nine Iron.

2013 Soil Sampling Program

The soil geochemical sampling program was part of a 2013 phase two summer work program at Angilak that also included; ongoing metallurgical/optimization studies, prospecting, mapping, camp upgrades and environmental monitoring. Overall, a total of 1,538 soil geochemical samples were collected along lines spaced approximately 200 to 300 metres apart using 50 metre stations. Soil samples were analysed at Activation Laboratories Ltd. (“Actlabs”) in Ancaster, Ontario using the Enzyme Leach method.  387 anomalous results (25% of all samples taken) range from 6.5 ppb U to a high of 2,880 ppb U. Of these anomalous results, 387, 232, 154 and 77 reported in the 75th, 85th, 90th and 95th percentiles respectively.  Anomalous ranges for Enzyme Leach uranium analyses were generated through statistical frequency analysis. Background was determined by the population mean after cutting significant outliers to the 99th percentile.  Like the Lac 50 Trend inferred resource, anomalous uranium-in-soil was also generally associated with copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo) and silver (Ag). 236 samples yielded anomalous Cu values > 75.0 ppb, 239 anomalous samples were > 4.0 ppb Mo, and 102 anomalous samples were > 0.4 ppb Ag. Table 1 shows value ranges and anomalous thresholds for elements of interest obtained by the 2013 Enzyme Leach soil sampling program.

To verify and calibrate enzyme leach results, 64 soil geochemical orientation samples were analyzed at Actlabs using conventional soil geochemical assay methods and soil gas hydrocarbon testing.  An additional 75 samples were submitted to SGS Canada Inc. in Vancouver, B.C. for mobile metal ion (MMI) and Pb isotope studies.

QA/QC

The Actlabs facility is accredited to international quality standards through the International Organization for Standardization/International Electrotechnical Commission (ISO/IEC) 17025 (ISO/IEC 17025 includes ISO 9001 and ISO 9002 specifications) with CAN-P-1578 (Forensics), CAN-P-1579 (Mineral Analysis) and CAN-P-1585 (Environmental) for specific registered tests by the SCC.   A 0.75g sample of -60 mesh B soil horizon is leached in an enzyme matrix containing a glucose oxidaze solution at 30° C for one hour, where it reacts with amorphous MnO2 dissolving it. Metals are then complexed with the gluconic acid present. Two controls for every 49 samples are leached in the same procedure. Solutions are analyzed on a Perkin Elmer ELAN 6000, 6100 or 9000 ICP/MS.  Laboratory quality control (QC) includes blanks analysed every 49 samples and a repeat analysis on every 10th sample. Kivalliq’s quality assurance and quality control procedures include the systematic insertion of blanks, standards and duplicates in the field. All QA/QC results were within expectations.
